Fruits of the Spirit vs. The World: Kindness

June 19, 2012

After a long hiatus, I have returned to the blogging universe.

Kindness is in short supply today. If you don’t believe me, go to a retail store. More likely than not, you’ll find that the employees, far from being helpful, could really care less if you shop there. (My apologies to all the good retail store employees.) People are so caught up in their own selfish ambitions that they forget about other people. Then, when their house of cards comes crashing down, they’re left alone, wondering why no one wants to help them.

There’s a shocking thing about kindness. Kindness works. An employee at the store who is kind to his customers will not only be more productive, but will enjoy himself a lot more. A boss who is kind to her employees will not only see productivity rise, but will enjoy her job a lot more. Kindness is better for both business and personal life. Practicing kindness will make your life worthwhile.

If kindness works so well, why isn’t the world so bad at showing kindness? The answer is that kindness is real. Kindness has to be sincere. Even when someone is trying to be polite even when they are angry on the inside, their has to be some sincerity involved. If a person cannot be sincerely kind, they should at least sincerely want to be sincerely kind. But fake kindness doesn’t fool anyone for long, and real kindness is a discipline that the world doesn’t want to cultivate. It’s easier to live in your own house of cards that you build. It’s also miserable.

Jesus gave us a good rule for kindness: “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” It’s a rule that’s often referenced, but rarely carried out. It’s something that we should think about more often. If I were the customer instead of the employee, how would I want to be treated? If I were the boring person who talks about boring things instead of the sophisticated, witty, urbane intellectual that I am, how would I want to be treated. Thinking like this will help make everyone’s life better.

Kindness, as one of the gifts given to us by the Spirit, is already ours. Now we need to practice it to the point of making it part of who we are. And Fore!…it’s one of my favorites.
