Arnold Toynbee, MLK, etc.

January 23, 2013

No new post today–too tired and busy, especially after the long weekend. However, I promise that Friday’s post will be a veritable extravaganza, and will contain mention of Mikhail Bahktin (I sure hope I spelled his name right.) For today, I will give you Arnold Toynbee’s thoughts on the “American Dream.”

If the fact if death were once admitted to be a reality even in the United States, then it would have to be admitted that the United States is not the earthly paradise that it is deemed to be (and this is one of the crucial articles of faith in the “American Way of Life.”) [From Man’s Concern with Death]

And also, on a somewhat happier note, here is my belated MLK Jr. Day post. This is an excellent rendition of “Precious Lord” by the Blind Boys of Alabama.
